Pride Month Celebrations in the Metaverse 2022

The metaverse is not new to holding events, concerts, and virtual interactions. This June, several blockchain-based platforms held and continue to host a slew of pride events. It marks another platform and location to celebrate inclusivity, participate in pride parades, and highlight the issues and struggles the LGBTQ+ community faces worldwide.

Virtual parades, floats, costume contests, panel discussions, DJ parties, freebies, and other attractions are among the proceedings carried out. In this article, we explore some of the Pride events that have occurred and are yet to take place on different platforms in the metaverse.

Decentraland

Decentraland is a virtual reality platform that allows users to develop, experience, and monetize their content and applications. The platform announced a month-long celebration of pride at the beginning of June 2022. Decentraland’s Festival Land district, decorated in rainbows for the event, will serve as the hub and major focus of month-long pride celebrations. It consists of the Rainbow Stage, the Metapride Land Stage, and booths run by event partners and sponsors.

It hosted a virtual pride parade beginning on June 11 and is reported to run until the end of pride month. Visitors can ride colorful floats, explore various booths, watch on-stage performances, and claim free wearables distributed throughout the arena. Mexican singer and pop star Thalia had her own float in the parade. She also headlined the first weekend of Metaverse Pride with a mashup performance of her most popular tracks on the Rainbow Stage.

The Metapride Land Festival, an upcoming two-day celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, will be held in Brooklyn as part of New York City Pride. It will be broadcasted simultaneously on the Metapride Land Stage.

Also hosted by Decentraland is the Pride Panel Series, which will provide opportunities for learning and growth, conversation, networking, and NFT art galleries and exhibitions.

AltspaceVR

Microsoft-owned AltspaceVR is a platform that allows artists, creators, marketers, and organizations to host virtual events that foster community. AltspaceVR hosted a number of activities, talks, and informative presentations via virtual meetings during Pride Month.

On June 2, they began with an LGBTQ+ and Friends Meetup, a weekly meeting that provides a virtual venue for those who have difficulties discussing their thoughts and experiences, as well as serving as a support group offering encouragement and acceptance.

They hosted a ‘Pride has no borders’ experimental event on June 17. This interactive event offered information about the state of LGBTQ+ rights in a virtual world from LGBTQ+ activists and advocates from Microsoft, Team Xbox, and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA World). Members of Microsoft’s GLEAM team (Global LGBTQI+ Employees and Allies at Microsoft) were also featured during the presentation.
