Afro Nation, one of the world’s largest music festivals celebrating and spotlighting the African diaspora, music, and culture, has recently published a short documentary – ‘A Movement,’ featuring behind-the-scenes videos and exclusive interviews.
Directed by Rita Guimaraes, Afro Nation has released a concise film charting the rise of the festival and the steady but constant advancement of amapiano and Afrobeats genres globally, whilst also exhibiting how Afro Nation has given artists a podium to shine on.
This documentary film arrived ahead of the festival’s appearance from June 26, 2024, onwards at Praia da Rocha beach in Portimao, Algarve, Portugal, with the likes of Nicki Minaj, REMA, J Hus, Ninho, Flavour, Tyla, Omah Lay, Dadju & Tayc, Asake, and more.
‘A Movement’ features insights from festival co-founder Smade, comedian/presenter Eddie Kadi, radio host Shopsydoo, Event Horizon’s Esosa Uddoh, UK-based Nigerian choreographer Ezinne Asinugo, and production manager Elikem Atti. Musicians who appear include Ghanaian Afropop and R&B artist Camidoh, Afrobeat group The Compozers, South African record producer Musa Keys, dancer/singer Kamo Mphela, and Ghanaian singer/rapper Black Sherif, to name a few.
The documentary is well-complemented by a soundtrack that whips out ‘GWAGWALADA’ by Bnxn, Tayc’s ‘N’y pense plus,’ and ‘Mnike’ from Tyler ICU.
This year’s impending festival is poised to unleash servings of Afrobeats, hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, Amapiano, Afro-swing, hip-hop, pop, jazz, electronic, and reggae music to concertgoers. Alongside the headliners, Afro Nation’s Amapiano stage is masterfully stacked with acts such as DBN Gogo, Uncle Waffles, and Major League DJs.
Afro Nation was founded by Adesegun Adeosun Jnr aka Smade and Obi Asika and is produced by Live Nation Entertainment. The first edition took place in Portugal in 2019, with concerts in Ghana and later Puerto Rico.
