‘In My Asymmetry’ EP by Frizzell D’Souza Is Out Now

Bangalore-based singer-songwriter Frizzell D’Souza illuminates her resume with her second EP ‘In My Asymmetry,’ comprised of six tracks and furnished with strummy guitars, lush synths, and somber production drafting a wistful soundscape.

We take a look at Frizzell’s new EP and bring to you a tiny recap of her recent performance in Mumbai!

To an architect, symmetry refers to equal and proportionate similarities between two parts of an object, while Frizell D’Souza – an architecture graduate, offers a rebuttal via a sonic exploration of the grey zones of life, underscoring the majesty found in the spaces between.

“The idea of ‘symmetry’ represents a mindset that values clear distinctions between right and wrong, good and bad, and doesn’t leave much room for greys,” says Frizzell. “‘In My Asymmetry’ is a counterpoint against this mindset.”

Earlier releases ‘Symmetries‘ and ‘Long To Be‘ hinted at the EP’s tonality as well as the artist’s fresh approach to music, still staying faithful to her alternative/indie-pop roots. ‘Paint Brushes in the Ground’ opens the record, characterized by polished synth work, strummy guitars, dazzling key parts and Frizzell’s dulcet vocals.

‘Mum’s Lullaby’ maps out a poignant, oscillating acoustic guitar-driven tune mended with emotive lyrics and soothing key arrangements, while ‘When Dawn Breaks Again’ serves as an instrumental composition, spanning a minute-long akin to ‘Interlude’ on her debut EP ‘The Hills Know Of You.’ ‘Keep Me In Meadows’ wraps up this EP by sculpting a blissful melody that commences with picky string segments. The track unhurriedly stirs in harmonized vocals over ambient textures to deliver a captivating single.

Speaking about ‘In My Asymmetry’ via a press statement, the artist shared, “It’s a recognition that the world is much more complex than simple black-and-white categories suggest. There’s a wide range of ideas, experiences, and truths that can’t be neatly put into boxes. It’s a way of celebrating inclusivity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the complexities of our human experience.”

Frizzell D’Souza lit up Mumbai’s multi-purpose live events nucleus, AntiSocial, with a glowing performance of her new and prior music releases. Along with promoting the release of her latest EP, this concert was also part of the first installment of the Indian talent management community Misfit Inc.’s Not Dead Yet: It’s aLIVE ongoing residency at AntiSocial, which celebrates the agency’s fifth anniversary.

Accompanied by musicians Aadarsh Subramaniam and Anirudh Ravi, Frizzell opened with her new single ‘Paintbrushes in the Ground,’ followed by ‘Just As Easily’ (2022) and new songs from the record ‘Symmetries,’ and ‘Long To Be’ – which garnered a massive pop reaction from the crowd owing to its outro lyrics, “Hey beautiful / let’s watch the city lights shimmer / Tonight in Bombay.”

Marked with her now signature plucky guitar and crafty work on the frets, the singer added renditions of earlier releases – ‘Foolish Once Again,’ ‘The Hills Know Of You,’ and ‘Drown Away’ – to the setlist, before concluding with ‘Mum’s Lullaby,’ a song written during the uncertain times of the pandemic as an ode to her mother, a healthcare professional.
