British drum & bass heavyweight act The Prototypes, now solely operated by producer Nick White, is scheduled to overrun Auckland on June 21, 2024. He will take over the premier venue Darby Street from 11 PM onwards, with local acts Kusanic, SLESS, SLAPS and Amack on support duties. The Prototypes’ itinerary maps out a month-long stint in Australia and New Zealand, dubbed ‘The Prototypes Bass Jump Tour,’ that kicks off in Christchurch, followed by gigs in Perth, Auckland, Ohakune, Wakana, Sydney, and Queenstown. This is also Nick White’s first solitary jaunt of the land down under.
Patched together by Christchurch-based DnB concerts host and touring maestros SUB180, The Prototypes arrives in Aotearoa with an arsenal of drum & bass, breakbeats, and jungle ready to plague the dance floor of events space Darby Street Station.
Commenting about the tour, the music producer posted on social media, “Buzzing to announce I’m doing my first solo tour of New Zealand & Australia in June and this time I’m bringing my BASS JUMP show with me!!!!”
The Prototypes also recently launched a DnB-focused label Roadblock Records with Benny V, with the vision “to release banging DnB from producers that push boundaries and package it differently to the rest,” as told by White to UKF. White’s debut solo single ‘First Sun’ was released via Roadblock Records in March of this year, with more releases in store.
Auckland’s ever-lively local talent pool sees a pile of spectacular artists on support duties for The Prototypes’ show. Producer Amack, DnB/dubstep DJ Luka Campbell, best known as Kusanic, musician Daniel ‘SLESS’ Slessor, and bass force Amber White aka SLAPS all feature. SLESS charges at Darby Street Station on the heels of dropping the fierce DnB/electro track ‘Half Life‘ via Dark Machine Records.
Bass head SLAPS chatted with us about her inaugural session at Darby Street, which, as fate would have it, falls on her birthday! Shedding light on her performance, the artist shares, “You can expect the classic SLAPS high energy and boppy beats. However, I’ve taken the time to really dig through and experiment with my music to curate something super special for this set!”
When asked about how it feels to be plastered on a line-up alongside The Prototypes, SLAPS affirms, “So stoked!” She adds, “It feels so surreal to be supporting international artists when they come over but it’s always a huge honor being matched to an artist/artists I’ve looked up to since I started messing around with music.”
Concluding our exchange, SLAPS heaped praise on the organizers. She said, “Super super grateful to be picked up by amazing promoters who have been working tirelessly (especially after COVID) to showcase amazing international artists while also uplifting smaller local legends. Very lucky to be living this life! – Can’t wait to see you at the dance on the 21st.”
Darby Street Station in Auckland CBD harbors a capacity of more than 350 attendees and has welcomed the likes of Spencer Brown, Flowidus, and Lee Mvtthews in recent times.
