Ereimang Shares New Single, ‘Heirangkhoi’

Manipur’s roaring nature core outfit Ereimang, spearheaded by musician Kamal Singh, has dropped their second single ‘Heirangkhoi,’ discussing life’s many transitions and experiences.

Project Ereimang began as an endeavor to break down barriers and probe the possibilities of sound between shoegaze, noise/alternative rock, metal, and traditional Manipuri folk by Manipur-rooted and Bengaluru-based artist Kamal Singh.

Ereimang does not have a specified meaning but is a made-up term, conceived from a variety of elements such as blood, flow, current, forest, dream, lost-unknown, and funeral area representing the notion. “That which flows out (gently and with mighty force) of the forest.”

Soaring high from their debut single ‘Kwakta Lamjel,’ which adds heavy rock textures to the timeless Meitei language ballad ‘Khamba Thoibi,’ Ereimang presents their sophomore outing, ‘Heirangkhoi’ – yet another visually and sonically fascinating music offering.

Winged by Reagan Yumnam on drums and guitarist Laipubam Gajendra Sharma, Kamal enlists in the vocal prowess of singer Nganthoibi Ningthouja and actor/dancer Purnima Yengkokpam to perform the contemporary dance movements while sporting an all-white attire with extended sleeves and horizontally shaped headgear resembling a veil.

Dipping into the music, ‘Heirangkhoi’ offers a robust concoction of heavy bass tugs, thumping drums, and snazzy distorted rhythms, all elevated by passionate vocal arrangements and harmonious song structure. The music video, directed by Heisnam Shantanu, cuts through frames of flowing body movement of the dancers in an open field and the dense forest, sliced with shots of the musicians in action.

About the music video, Kamal expressed in a press statement, “It is important to release these songs with a music video to set context and offer insight into something that is probably unheard of and
unknown to the rest of India.”
