Singer-songwriter, producer, and lynchpin of the Kiwi music scene MC Tali is set to take attendees on a journey through her illustrious career via ‘Flip The Script,’ an intimate presentation of her music and storytelling. Multi-talented and multiple award-winning artist Natalia Sheppard, best known as MC Tali, will present an up close and personal experience of her selected works at Mount Eden Village Centre in Auckland on Saturday, 24 August. Get your tickets to TALI ‘Flip The Script’ in Auckland at The Ticket Fairy.
This showcase sees MC Tali shell out renditions of music from her entire music catalog to attendees, including works from ‘Do It For Yourself‘ (2006), ‘Love & Migration‘ (2018), and her debut album ‘Lyric on My Lip,’ which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.
For this close-knit comfy display, Tali ropes in jazz musician Cameron Sangster on drums and multi-instrumentalist/ producer Harry Charles on guitar duties. In addition to looking back at her acclaimed music career, MC Tali and her band are locked in to perform pared-down and stripped-back renditions of her many music releases over the years.
To completely imbibe the ‘intimate’ setting, concert-goers have the option of occupying a spot in a floor/carpet setup or chair seating arrangement and are also encouraged to bring along cushions or pillows. Hyping this event, MC Tali took to social media and shared, “‘Flip The Script’ is a live and intimate show featuring songs from all of my eight albums, spanning a 20-year career. Most of you know me as a Drum n Bass MC, but this event showcases my songwriting and vocals, with many songs stripped back and some completely reworked.”
For a glimpse of all that goes into the foundations of MC Tali and her journey as one of the first female drum & bass MCs, take a trip down memory lane and watch her self-produced documentary capturing the makings of ‘Lyric On My Lip’ listed above.
Filmed and edited during the lockdown, MC Tali told us at TFword about this documentary film, “It was also really nostalgic to look back at old footage and reminisce on my journey, the people I met, and the amazing adventures I experienced. It also brought up lots of old emotions and feelings of just how hard things were for me, being one of the few women trying to make it in DnB in the 2000s and the difficulties that I went through. In saying that though – those experiences made me who I am today and taught me a lot about how I choose to treat others and expect to be treated in return.”
