In Conversation With rinaldo About His Magnetic New Single ‘june’

Goa-based independent singer-songwriter Rinaldo D’souza, who goes by rinaldo, adds a shiny new single titled ‘june’ to his budding discography.

In the works since 2016 and self-produced by rinaldo, the multi-talented musician presents a reflection of his music thoughtfully tucking in introspective lyrics, and dynamic alternative rhythms all stewed in a slowcore/indie rock feel.

While speaking with us, rinaldo shared, “‘june’, I believe was inspired by a time and space I cherished and enjoyed deeply. More so, because I was pushed to an extent I didn’t think I could go or never knew existed.”

Glancing into its production, ‘june’ tremendously expands the artist’s sonic tapestry, delivering a seismic shift from his acoustic debut single ‘come over’ in 2017, and subsequent music releases ‘darling’ and ‘on my mind,’ while staying true to his emotive style of songwriting.

Breaking down this difference in presentation, the artist remarked, “‘june’ has inspired me to try new things, especially production-wise. I never thought I’d have a synth-ish intro on one of my songs, ever. Personally, it has just pushed me to be better and expect more from myself, and that it is okay to take your time with things.”

“I have tried to explore the alternative space with this song. Trying to keep the verses somewhat dreamy, because I love that sound. Well, the chorus… maybe I just wanted to have a part where I could just rock to,” he elaborated.

‘june’ opens to the sounds of birds chirping and then progressively develops a tune with pulsing synth textures, rich percussion patterns, and rhythmic guitars intertwined with chiming key segments, delightfully shrouded by rinaldo’s mellow vocal pitch and delivery. Wedged into the music is a snazzy hard-rock guitar riff, which rouses the melody and projects a heavier-sounding sequence.

Swooping into the origins of this single, rinaldo expressed, “I wrote ‘june’ in 2016-2017, and would often play it on an acoustic guitar. For the longest time, the song just sat there on my computer. In 2023, it somehow came back and I believe I produced it in a week or so. Somehow all of it just fell in place, the synths, the heavy chorus and then I knew it was ready.”

Post this release, rinaldo is set to add more music to his ledger. He told us, “I’m about to finish another song, finished production last week, should be readying to track vocals soon. I’m trying to build a portfolio of songs before I start pushing for performances.”
