Renowned music festival Afro Nation brings the mini-documentary ‘Afro Nation: A Movement,’ taking viewers behind the scenes and including interviews with festival co-founder Smade. Artists Camidoh, Musa Keys, Kamo Mphela, The Compozers, presenter Eddie Kadi, and more make an appearance in the doc. ‘Afro Nation: A Movement’ underlines the success of the festival and the growing influence of the genre worldwide.
House Music: A Cultural Revolution
‘House Music: A Cultural Revolution’ has been released to mark 40 years of house music. The documentary takes audiences to the origins of house music with archival footage. From underground venues to becoming an inspiration to chart-toppers today, the 52-minute feature details the early days of the genre that has become a worldwide phenomenon. It also centers on the underground black and gay clubs in Chicago that have made the genre it is today.
“House music is more than just the music, it’s a community,” said Barbara Allen, the producer of ‘House Music: A Cultural Revolution’ in an interview with Chicago Tonight. “The film talks a lot about the community… the congregation of people that make house music. Once you get the beat, it becomes almost chanting with your body—where you all get in the same groove as you would in a chant but you do it with your body and you’re dancing.”
DJ Mehdi: Made in France
Best known for combining hip-hop with electronic music, DJ Mehdi’s lasting impact has been explored in the six-part docu-series ‘DJ Mehdi: Made in France.’ Directed by Thibaut de Longeville, the series includes interviews with Cassius, Justice, MC Solaar, Key James, and more. It is an intimate look into the life of an artist who influenced many. ‘DJ Mehdi: Made in France’ helps audiences learn more about the icon who passed away too soon via unseen footage, exclusive interviews, and personal videos.
Turn Up The Bass
Netflix’s ‘Turn Up The Bass’ celebrates 20 years of DJ collective Deaf Rave. It shines a light on Deaf DJ Troi Lee, the founder of Deaf Rave, and his crew of deaf producers, MCs, sign singers, DJs, and more. Lee explains how the collective was formed and how, despite many setbacks and hardships, he has played to massive gatherings of both deaf and hearing people, including a renowned music festival like Glastonbury. Directed by Ted Evans, ‘Turn Up The Bass’ was created with the help of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund.
